The Republic of Benin is situated in West Africa. It has a GDP of $14.4 billion (2019) and is classified as a lower-middle income economy. Cotton, cashews and gold are the top exports and account for over 70% of exports (2018). Benin was chosen to be part of this project because of its relatively low level of central government debt (41% debt/GDP).
