Central Africa: Tensions at the top in DRC threaten its future

The first installment in a series of diplomatic briefings with Senior Research Fellow Stephanie Wolters explored issues in the Great Lakes area. These included:

  • Political in-fighting between the current and former presidents’ parties makes for dysfunction in the DRC
  • Controversy over threats to the judiciary and the head of the Independent Electoral Commission swirl in the DRC, exposing rifts in the ruling coalition
  • Conflict in the Eastern DRC unlikely to be resolved while there is ongoing political in-fighting in the capital
  • South Africa should become more engaged in the Great Lakes, and appoint a special envoy
  • Civil society and the political opposition react strongly to political moves in the DRC affecting the judiciary and electoral commission
