The deaths of several SANDF soldiers amid ongoing battles against M23 fighters in the Democratic Republic of the Congo have prompted questions over South Africa’s involvement.
“South Africa wanted to get involved because the DRC is a member state of SADC and they wanted to assist for the prestige as a peacekeeper,” says Stephanie Wolters, Senior Research Fellow at SAIIA and a Director of Okapi Consulting in this interview with Deutsche Welle.
