The South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA) mourns the sudden passing of Jenni Irish-Qhobosheane, a distinguished expert who dedicated her career to the critical fields of policing and criminal justice in South Africa.

As a research associate at SAIIA in the early 2000s, Jenni conducted in-depth research on the intricate workings of organised criminal networks and their detrimental economic impact on local communities. This culminated in a book titled Gentlemen or Villains, Thugs or Heroes? The Social Economy of Crime in South Africa.

Working across research, policy and government sectors, she was admired widely for her expertise and embodied the qualities of a true civil servant.

SAIIA extends its deepest condolences to Jenni’s family, friends and numerous colleagues during this difficult time.
