This flagship event, in collaboration with the Konrad-Adenauer Stiftung, will address how the new world order will influence careers in the humanities, particularly in the Global South.

Uncertainty appears to be the defining characteristic of the 21st century. What is clear, despite the present unpredictability globally, is that the world order is rapidly changing. The end of the Cold War brought with it the assumption of a unipolar world – an assumption that continues to be tested vigorously.  Currently, the post-World War II US-led international order is slowly declining, and its contradictions are becoming increasingly visible. The rise of China and the BRICS alliance has further shown tangible promise in promoting an alternative perspective on the possible futures of global governance. The Global South is playing a key role in shaping this new world order, as multipolarity increasingly becomes the norm.

The question that remains is: how will this new world order influence careers in the humanities, particularly in the Global South? This shifting landscape presents both challenges and opportunities, especially as artificial intelligence continues to shape our studies and professional lives. Many students have become increasingly attached to the idea that humanities degrees are relatively less useful compared to degrees within science, technology, engineering and medicine, particularly in the context of a continually globalised, interconnected and technologically focused world. What is often forgotten is that the pursuit of knowledge within the social sciences and humanities are required to develop policies, standards, rules and norms around living within this increasingly complex world.

The KAS-SAIIA Careers Event aims to demonstrate that there is no single career path for those with a humanities degree. Education within the humanities provides a nuanced, comprehensive and critical lens with which to view the world, which has become increasingly important in a world fraught with presumed certainties, misinformation and bias.

It is meant to encourage young people to view humanities degrees as vectors to promote positive social change and allow them to have a voice.

It will:

  • Showcase the different career paths within the humanities and social sciences
  • Exhibit various sectors and organisations
  • Announce the opening of applications for the KAS-SAIIA Scholarship for 2026
  • Allow students to hear from those who play prominent roles in the public and private sectors
  • Explain the opportunities available in a shifting world order

Register here for in-person attendance.

The event will be livestreamed.

We look forward to your participation.
