South Africa’s foreign policy is based on its values and national interests, leading to a particular posture in a world now defined by efforts to reconfigure the rules-based international order. The country’s evolving posture is rational but entails costs.
South Africa is of importance to Spain and to the European Union and will influence the shape of an emerging global order, not least because of its presidency of the Group of 20 in 2025 in the aftermath of the inclusion of the African Union in the G20.
The creation of a Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa, after the elections of 2024, gives the GNU an opportunity to clarify the aims and principles of South Africa’s foreign policy, and the outcome will be of great interest to Europe and other international actors.
