Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has reinvigorated public discourse surrounding South Africa’s longstanding foreign policy of autonomy and non-alignment. Among other topics relating to the conflict that SAIIA has recently examined is the role of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Its expansion into Eastern Europe and its military operations on African soil, especially its controversial intervention in Libya in 2011, has been much debated in South Africa and across the continent.
The event will provide a platform for engagement between South African media, academic, and international affairs thought leaders on how to enhance South African public discourse related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The representatives from the United States, Canada, Estonia, and Sweden will also gain a greater understanding of the positions that exist across the political landscape of South Africa’s vibrant democracy. They will participate virtually from Brussels, while a panel of African analysts in Johannesburg will engage with them.

- Ambassador Julianne Smith, USA
