SAIIA is pleased to invite you to a webinar previewing the upcoming special issue of the 𝘚𝘰𝘢𝘡𝘩 𝘈𝘧𝘳π˜ͺ𝘀𝘒𝘯 π˜‘π˜°π˜Άπ˜³π˜―π˜’π˜ 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘐𝘯𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘯𝘒𝘡π˜ͺ𝘰𝘯𝘒𝘭 𝘈𝘧𝘧𝘒π˜ͺ𝘳𝘴 (π˜šπ˜ˆπ˜‘π˜π˜ˆ) focusing on the global just energy transition and merge various viewpoints on the green energy transition and mineral value chains from Latin America and Africa.

Participants are invited to engage with the work of various special issue authors, as well as guest editors Melanie MΓΌller, Meike Schulze and Svenja SchΓΆneich of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs.

Background

There is growing momentum to address climate change and other environmental challenges through a β€˜green energy transition’, that is, a shift from fossil fuel-based energy sources to renewable sources such as wind and solar. To carry out this global transition, a variety of resources – particularly minerals such as copper, lithium or cobalt – are required, and these are primarily extracted in the β€˜Global South’. This means that these resource-rich countries face a double transition: the transition in their energy supplies, and the transition in their mining sectors. This special issue brings together different perspectives on the green energy transition and mineral value chains from Latin America and Africa. The articles investigate challenges for these countries, but also the opportunities that could potentially unfold as part of these far-reaching changes.

Speakers:

  • Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, Chief Executive, SAIIA.
  • Melanie MΓΌller, Senior Associate, German Institute for International and Security Affairs, and guest editor of the special issue.
  • Faizel Ismail, Director of the Nelson Mandela School of Public Governance, University of Cape Town, and special issue author on β€˜Beyond the just energy transition narrative: How South Africa can support the AfCFTA to advance climate resilient development’.
  • Jan Ickler, Researcher and PhD candidate, University of Kassel, and special issue author on β€˜Green energy transitions and the temptation of natural resource rents: Experiences from Ecuador’.
