United Nations Secretary-General, Mr António Guterres, proposed the Summit of the Future to push for a more just and equitable international system, ensuring that developing countries have an equal voice in global decision-making. At the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations, Member States concurred with the need for such a gathering to consider reinvigorating and recalibrating multilateral cooperation to better tackle persisting, emerging and anticipated challenges.
The Summit comes at a crucial period for Africa, given social-economic development, security, political and environmental challenges. It presents an opportunity for the continent to champion its priorities and development agenda leveraging the potential of its youthful population.
Ahead of this month’s Summit of the Future in New York, UN Resident Coordinator Mr Nelson Muffuh addressed the Western Cape Branch of SAIIA on the need to reset global cooperation, reform the multilateral system and reaffirm our collective commitment towards achieving an inclusive and sustainable world and future. Mindful of the imperative to collaboratively realise this future-oriented vision for all societies, Muffuh highlighted the key elements integral to our path towards advancing a Pact for the Future, which is to include a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations.
