This joint symposium aimed to generate actionable insights and policy recommendations to refine South Africa’s foreign policy approach amid geopolitical uncertainties.

On 24 March 2025, DIRCO and SAIIA co-hosted a joint symposium in which the department discussed its foreign policy priorities, engaged stakeholders and addressed pressing diplomatic challenges.

As South Africa navigates shifting global alliances and contested norms, the event examined how it could sustain influence in multilateral forums while balancing strategic interests.

Key discussions focused on South Africa’s multilateral role, its engagement with BRICS and other strategic partners, and its evolving diplomatic relationships, including tensions with Western powers. The symposium also explored the implications of its legal action at the International Court of Justice and the resulting diplomatic and economic repercussions.

Additionally, it assessed the sustainability of South Africa’s regional security engagements, particularly its role in peacekeeping operations in the DRC.

With the country holding the G20 presidency amid geopolitical tensions, discussions highlighted strategies for leveraging this position to advance global influence while mitigating diplomatic risks.

By fostering dialogue among policymakers, academics and civil society, this event aimed to shape a more strategic and adaptive diplomatic approach that reinforces South Africa’s global standing in a contested international order.
