The declaration will be a culmination of negotiations currently under way at the SAIIA Young Leaders Conference (YLC). This year’s declaration theme is ‘Youth as implementers of change‘.
This year 60 delegates from across South Africa aged between 14 and 24 years have been selected to participate in the YLC, which opened yesterday and will run until 15 July 2022.
Delegates are hosting their own negotiations on key topics ranging from climate change to economic development, and relating them back to youth participation, youth-led action and policy implementation.
Delegates will ultimately produce and adopt a set of guiding recommendations, solutions and principles in the form of a declaration on how youth, decision-makers, civil society organisations, business leaders and the media can effectively engage young people as implementation partners to effect positive change.
The negotiations will lead up to the formal presentation and adoption of the 2022 Young Leaders Declaration at a national, African and global level.
The declaration will be handed over to officials from the UN, South African government, the diplomatic community and members of civil society.
