BRICS bloc adds six new members

The BRICS group of emerging economies has admitted six new members, its leaders announced on the final day of the bloc’s 2023 Summit held in Johannesburg. Argentina, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates were announced as the new members added to the bloc starting from January 2024.  In this interview with Voice of America, SAIIA’s Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme Steven Gruzd says some of the countries ‘make strange diplomatic bedfellows’.

SAIIA’s leading experts are available for interviews in person or virtually. We can also arrange for press to conduct interviews on-site at our headquarters in Johannesburg or at our Cape Town office.
The views expressed are those of the interviewees and do not necessarily reflect the views of the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA).
