De-dollarization discussions gain momentum ahead of BRICS summit in South Africa

With the BRICS Summit date fast approaching, discussions around the de-dollarization are picking up steam. According to media reports, the BRICS is exploring the creation of a common currency and the issue is likely on the summit agenda. In this interview with CGTN, SAIIA’s Senior Researcher Gustavo de Carvalho says in 2001 the bulk of trade was done in US dollars while in 2023 there has been a reduction in global trade done with the US dollar.
