US allegations call SA’s fence-sitting over Russia-Ukraine conflict into question

South Africa plans to appoint an independent inquiry led by a retired judge to probe allegations made by the US ambassador to South Africa that SA supplied weapons to Russia. According to Senior Researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs, Gustavo de Carvalho, South Africa’s non-alignment stance has been questioned given its close relations with Moscow.

SAIIA’s leading experts are available for interviews in person or virtually. We can also arrange for press to conduct interviews on-site at our headquarters in Johannesburg or at our Cape Town office.
