Why we need to control the trade in donkey hides

As Africa is home to the world’s largest supply of donkeys, it has become a key market in
meeting China’s explosive ejiao demand. In this Cape Talk interview, SAIIA’s Consultant Senior Researcher, Lauren Johnston, says the demand for donkey hides is a recent phenomenon, sparked by rising per capita income in China. She describes the donkey trade market as mostly illicit and unregulated, negatively impacting some African countries.

SAIIA’s leading experts are available for interviews in person or virtually. We can also arrange for press to conduct interviews on-site at our headquarters in Johannesburg or at our Cape Town office.
