Zimbabwe opposition leader Nelson Chamisa quits ‘hijacked’ party

Zimbabwe’s defeated presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa has quit the political movement he founded two years ago, claiming it had been ‘hijacked’ by the ruling party. SAIIA’s Chief Executive, Elizabeth Sidiropoulos, says that Chamisa’s move was a repeat of what had happened to the opposition in Zimbabwe many times over the past two decades. In this Financial Times interview, she was quoted as saying, “The CCC didn’t do too badly in the last election, but there’s obviously been a degree of infiltration by Zanu-PF”.

SAIIA’s leading experts are available for interviews in person or virtually. We can also arrange for press to conduct interviews on-site at our headquarters in Johannesburg or at our Cape Town office.
