Job opportunity: Editorial Assistant

SAIIA seeks to appoint an Editorial Assistant to support the Institute’s publishing production process.

Editorial Assistant (Part-time, 6-month contract) 

We are recruiting for an Editorial Assistant with experience in the academic research / think tank sector. An interest in global affairs and a meticulous eye for detail are essential. This is a hybrid role, requiring the candidate to work from SAIIA’s main office in Johannesburg one day per week. This position will require 12 – 16 hours of dedicated time per week, and remuneration will be based on experience.  

Responsibilities:  

  • Editing/Preparing manuscripts for editing according to in-house style guidelines  
  • Checking corrections and marking up of page proofs  
  • Final proofreading and sign off  
  • Assisting with reporting 
  • Financial and other ad hoc administration 

Qualifications and Experience: 

  • A degree in English, Journalism, Publishing or Media Studies 
  • A minimum of three years of work experience in an editing/proofreading role 
  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken 

Skills: 

  • Analytical with strong research skills 
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat Distiller
  • Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style   
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign is desirable but not essential  
  • Sound planning and organising skills 
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
