On Friday 30 January, Zimbabwe’s President Robert Mugabe was appointed the new chair of the African Union. His appointment was made during the annual two-day heads of state summit at the African Union’s headquarters in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa.
President Mugabe, who is 90 years old and has ruled his country since 1980, succeeded Mauritania’s President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz as chair. Steven Gruzd, head of the Governance and APRM programme at the South African Institute of International Affairs, discussed the implications of Mugabe’s appointment with SABC News.
