In the face of South Africa's staggering youth unemployment crisis, the Careers Event hosted by SAIIA and the Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung on 14 August provided a beacon of hope for humanities graduates.

The event, aptly titled ‘Formative Futures: How to Find Employment with Your Humanities Degree’, drew a packed room of eager students and online participants.

Our dynamic speakers, Professor Bhaso Ndzendze, award-winning journalist Leanne Manas and Tsotang Sethabela from the South African Red Cross Society, highlighted the often-overlooked career potential within the humanities field and provided valuable advice for graduates preparing to enter the job market. Representatives from the Department of International Relations and Co-operation (DIRCO), Lusu Booi, Albert Geldenhuys and Kabelo Ramongane, then shared personal insights into their paths to successful diplomatic careers.

The following exhibitors engaged with students about their organisations’ objectives, developmental programmes and prospective employment options:

  • International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC)
  • German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)
  • FW de Klerk Foundation
  • DIRCO
  • KAS
  • Wits Counselling Careers and Development Unit
  • Brenthurst Foundation
  • Amnesty International (Wits)
  • National Youth Coalition
  • Youth Opportunities Hub
  • Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)

This annual highlight on SAIIA’s events calendar is aimed at inspiring and empowering young people to forge meaningful careers.

KAS and SAIIA also announced the opening of the 2025 KAS-SAIIA Scholarship applications. Students are encouraged to submit their applications by 21 September 2024.

We extend our gratitude to the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, speakers, exhibitors, students and current cohort of KAS-SAIIA Scholars for making this event a resounding success.
