The Institute will host a T20 ASG meeting on the sidelines of the T20 Summit in Mysuru, India, which takes place from 31 July to 2 August. Panelists will discuss African expectations for the upcoming G20 Summit in September.
The meeting comes as international support for the African Union to become a member of the G20 gathers momentum. As the only African country currently represented in the G20, South Africa’s 2025 G20 presidency offers another opportunity to consolidate the voice of the Global South in this powerful bloc, building on the work of the successive Global South G20 presidencies of Indonesia (2022), India (2023) and Brazil (2024).
Panel discussion
On 2 August, SAIIA will co-convene a panel to discuss green recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic in the context of challenges (and opportunities) provided by the current global financial architecture. The panel will reflect on the role that the G20 and how international financial institutions can support national macro-economic policy interventions in a way that contributes to climate resilience and reduces social vulnerabilities.
SAIIA will present key findings from our COVID-19 Macroeconomic Policy Responses in Africa project (CoMPRA) with presentations from SAIIA’s Associate Economist, Dr Joseph Matola and CoMPRA contributing author, Dr Awa Diouf. The panel will be moderated by our Chief Executive, Elizabeth Sidiropoulos.
The event will be livestreamed from the T20 Secretariat’s YouTube Channel on 2 August 2023 from 5:30am SAST.
