Nerissa Muthayan is a Research Fellow in our Climate Change and Resource Governance Programme at SAIIA.

Nerissa Muthayan is a researcher and data analyst, currently completing her Master’s Degree in Data Science (e-Science) at the University of the Witwatersrand. Her current research focuses on internet shutdowns in relation to democracy and digital authoritarianism. She holds an Honours Degree with distinction in International Relations and a Bachelor’s Degree with distinction in English Literature, International Relations, and Political Science. Nerissa has extensive experience as an International Delegate, representing South Africa at several global conferences and is also a member of the South African BRICS Youth Association. She has expertise in a range of qualitative and quantitative research techniques, including research design, data collection, data analysis and data visualization. She is passionate about developing innovative solutions that can help to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase resilience to climate change, and promote sustainable development.
