In a landmark moment for the Global South, the G20 Leaders’ Declaration has been officially adopted under South Africa’s presidency, marking the first time the group’s highest-level consensus has been reached on the African continent.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on the first day of the Leaders’ Summit that the Declaration was adopted by an overwhelming majority of the Group of 20 Member States present in Johannesburg.

“The adoption of the declaration from the summit sends an important signal to the world that multilateralism can and does deliver. It sends a message of hope and solidarity. It tells the world that as the leaders of the G20, we will keep fast to our solemn pledge to leave no person, no community and no country behind,” the President said in his opening address at the Summit.
