In celebration of Women’s Month in August 2019, the Africa Portal is releasing a number of outputs as part of its thematic series for the year focused on ‘Women, Power and Policy Making’.

This series will feature the voices of African women leaders in politics, law, education, trade, science and health, and unpack women’s participation in decision-making and the challenges they encounter. It will also examine African countries’ progress towards achieving gender equality, as set out in the UN Sustainable Development Goals and the AU’s Vision 2063. The first output is eight policy briefs.

In March 2019, the Africa Portal released a call for abstracts for policy briefs focused on these issues as part of a research competition. In the weeks that followed, over 100 applications from around the world were reviewed by a dedicated panel of experts who narrowed this down to the final eight briefs. These briefs delve into pressing concerns around women and climate change, business, peace and security, and political representation, among others.
