Bilateral investment treaties

Luke Eric Peterson of the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) presented research on South Africa’s growing stock of bilateral investment treaties (BITs).

Few realise the extent to which these agreements constrain a government’s policy options and, as a result, few ascribe BITs the same importance as trade agreements. The research suggests this should change.
