SADC is advancing its digital infrastructure, aiming to modernise services and boost the digital economy. However, this digital transformation primarily focuses on economic objectives that often overlook human rights leading to abuses such as violations of online privacy, freedom of expression and access to information.
This webinar, led by SAIIA’s Futures Programme, will explore the adequacy of current laws in SADC member states to protect digital rights amidst the rapid adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence, facial recognition and data surveillance.
It highlights how state and non-state actors, including businesses and criminal networks, perpetrate digital rights violations through practices like internet shutdowns, censorship and unregulated data extraction.
The discussion will focus on the urgent need for SADC member states to adopt a human rights-based approach to digital governance.
