The deaths of several SANDF soldiers in the DRC has sparked criticism over South Africa’s involvement in the country’s ongoing conflict.

“The decision to deploy that [SANDF] force took many of us by surprise. It had followed several years where the relationship between SADC and between South Africa and the DRC had been rather icy,” SAIIA Senior Research Fellow Stephanie Wolters tells Newzroom Afrika.
