US ambassador to South Africa Reuben Brigety accused South Africa of providing weapons and ammunition to Russia. The ambassador alleged these we loaded onto a Russian cargo ship, the Lady R, at Simon’s Town Naval Base in December last year. According to SAIIA’s Senior Researcher Gustavo de Carvalho in an interview with Cape Argus, the US response to this issue encapsulates its mounting frustration over South Africa’s apparent closeness with Russia.
