This report explores the governance challenges identified by civil society organisations in Malawi from 2022 to 2024, under the guidance of SAIIA and the Malawi Economic Justice Network.

Summary

  • Malawi acceded to the APRM in 2004 but has not yet undergone the country review process. It is now positioned for both self-assessment and peer review.
  • Awareness of the APRM among Malawi’s citizens is low and civil society organisations in the country have identified several governance issues of relevance to the APRM to help address this.
  • Many of the issues identified are overlapping and improvement in one area could be linked to the enhancement of another.
  • The report finds that while many of the legal mechanisms for improved governance are in place, practical follow-through and implementation remain areas that require attention if governance and the overall socio-economic position of Malawians are to improve.
