SAJIA Special Issue Vol. 33.2: Digital Pathways to Peace in Africa

21 Aug 2026

SAJIA Volume 33.2 is now available to read on the Taylor & Francis website. This special issue examines the repercussions of the Fourth Industrial Revolution for peace in Africa, asking what peace means in an environment of profound technological and societal transformation. The contributions explore digital pathways to peace by examining both the opportunities and challenges presented by digital technologies, and how they shape diplomacy, peacebuilding, security, governance and civic participation across the continent.

The issue includes articles on tech diplomacy and Africa’s agency in the context of US–China competition, the use of digital technology for peace interventions, and the role of the African Union in responding to technology-enabled terrorism. Other contributions examine misinformation and the limits of fact-checking during Kenya’s 2022 elections, the everyday digital practices of women traditional leaders in South Africa, community innovation and digital surveillance in peacebuilding, and the role of information and communication technology in peacebuilding in Nigeria.

The volume also features five book reviews exploring themes including digital international relations, PeaceTech, counter-terrorism, elections and digital technologies in Africa.
