Steven Gruzd served as Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme.

The late Steven Gruzd was a leading expert in international relations and a fierce advocate for good governance and democracy in Africa. As the Head of the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme at SAIIA, Steve was a stalwart defender of democratic values whose work left an indelible mark on the continent.

Steve’s journey with the Institute began in April 2003 as Research Manager for the NEPAD and Governance Programme. In May 2008, he became Head of the successor programme on Governance and the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM). After serving as Senior Researcher and Diplomatic Liaison at the SA Jewish Board of Deputies from 2011 to 2013, he returned to SAIIA to lead the African Governance and Diplomacy Programme, a role he held with unwavering dedication until his passing.

A prolific scholar, Steve published widely on governance, international relations and Russia-Africa relations in particular. He was a sought-after commentator on African political developments and foreign policy, frequently appearing in local and global media. He also hosted a popular magazine talk show on 101.9 ChaiFM.

Steve held an MSc in International Relations from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a BA (Hons) in International Relations from the University of the Witwatersrand. He will be remembered by SAIIA colleagues for his brilliant mind, his deep camaraderie and his gentle spirit.
