The five BRICS members are different across many dimensions; yet a common characteristic is that they are or will be old before they are rich.

Summary:

  • Current global geo-economic and geostrategic change has brought more attention to the BRICS countries, individually and as a grouping.
  • Outside of their ageing populations, BRICS countries share little in common.
  • BRICS countries now have to navigate the phenomenon of ‘getting old before getting rich’ to enhance their development.
  • It is in their favour to advance proactive responses to demographic change to ensure that each BRICS country does not fall victim to its own ‘economically’ early demographic success.
  • It is also important for these countries to target their investment more in the education of younger population segments than in labour and technological productivity.
