The Group of Twenty (G20), as a forum for international cooperation on global economic governance and finance, has supported African development through the introduction of various initiatives and plans.

The expansion of its original mandate has led the group to include other issues that directly impact Africa. It is crucial that the G20 development agenda remains cognisent of the development of the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the need to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As such, this discussion paper conducts a comparative analysis of the UN SDGs and the AU agenda, as well as existing G20 initiatives. In view of the gaps that have been identified, recommendations are made to the South African government – as a member of the G20 – on how future G20 engagements could support African objectives, in particular the African Development Agenda 2063 and the SDGs, in a more meaningful and effective manner.
