He joined SAIIA in April 2021 in a consulting capacity on the COVID-19 and Macroeconomic Policy Responses in Africa project. While with SAIIA, Joseph has conducted research on various topics under the economic resilience and inclusion themes, including building three indices to measure socio-economic vulnerability to pandemics, macroeconomic vulnerability and macroeconomic resilience to the effects of climate change. He has also engaged in research on development financing with a focus on the role of the G20 in Africa’s climate financing initiative and resolving its debt vulnerabilities. Joseph holds a PhD in Development Economics from the National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies in Japan. Prior to joining SAIIA, he served as Principal Economist in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs in Malawi where he worked for 11 years.
